Red Hat Linux 9 á leiðinni

Red Hat hafa tilkynnt að útgáfa 9 (ekki 9.0) sé á leiðinni. Þetta telst óvenjulegt þar sem útgáfurnar 8.1, 8.2 og 8.3 komu aldrei út.
Miklar breytingar eru í gangi hjá Red Hat þessa dagana og hafa þeir m.a. gefið út heila línu af Linux dreifingum ætlaða fyrir netþjónamarkaðinn. Red Hat Linux 9 er aðalega ætlaður fyrir vinnustöðvar.
Talið er að samkeppni við Sun hafi verið orðsökin fyrir því að Red Hat hafi ákveðið að kalla nýjustu útgáfuna 9.
Red Hat hefur einnig tilkynnt að viðskiptavinir í Red Hat Network fái aðgang að Red Hat Linux viku áður en það er gefið út.

The software giant's efforts to mock open-source software such as Linux have worked against the company
Some of Microsoft's efforts to disparage open-source software such as Linux have backfired, according to a recent memo by the software maker.
Top Microsoft executives, including co-founder Bill Gates and chief executive Steve Ballmer, have long derided open-source software as being everything from a "cancer" to "Pac-Man-like." But those messages have failed to diminish the popularity of open-source programs such as Linux among developers and customers, according to a Microsoft memo distributed at a strategy meeting in Berlin in September.

In a move that is bound to humiliate many people who take things too seriously, Microsoft announced that it has purchased Linux today. When asked for comment, Bill Gates was heard to say, "Now let's see them say something bad about me on Slashdot." AMD said the news will delay Hammer by another year, which will put it right on track with where the company hoped it would be.
